Nurses and midwives are the largest healthcare workforce in the world and sit at the heart of every health system, often the first point of contact for patients and communities. Yet our value extends far beyond direct care. We are innovators, educators, researchers and policymakers, and our knowledge and lived experience are essential in shaping healthcare services and responding to today’s challenges. This conference celebrates that contribution, and ensures our voices continue to influence the decisions affecting our profession and communities.
Nurses as researchers and knowledge leaders
A key focus this year is our role as researchers and contributors to the evidence base underpinning healthcare. As healthcare grows increasingly evidence-based and technology-driven, nursing perspectives must be represented, particularly given the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which can only reflect the knowledge available to it. With limited published nursing research from many Sub-Saharan African contexts and the wider diaspora, this conference creates a platform for nurses and midwives from Malawi, the UK and beyond to showcase research, share innovation and contribute to bi-directional learning.
Global nurses, global impact
At MUNA, we proudly identify as global nurses and midwives. Many of us have lived, trained and worked across different countries and healthcare systems, giving us a unique perspective and a strong position to influence healthcare both locally and globally. Our work is grounded in the spirit of UBUNTU, the belief that our humanity is interconnected, echoed in the African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” This philosophy sits at the heart of MUNA, guiding our commitment to collaboration and partnership. Through our UK–Malawi connections and wider global partnerships, we continue building bridges that strengthen healthcare, leadership and learning across borders.

Celebrating our stories: the MUNA book launch
A special highlight of this year’s conference will be the launch of MUNA’s Book, a powerful collection of reflections from Malawian nurses and midwives working across the NHS and social care during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than a record of the pandemic, the book is a testament to the strength of our profession and a reminder that our stories matter. By sharing these experiences, we honour those who served on the frontline, celebrate the contribution of Malawian nurses and midwives, and create a lasting legacy that will inform, inspire and empower future generations.
